Kargil, located 8,780 feet above the sea level is the second largest town of Ladakh after Leh, situated on the banks of Indus (Suru) river. Kargil is a beautiful place and nature lovers ought to be here. It is a heaven for adventure enthusiasts as they can enjoy adventure sports such as trekking and mountaineering. During the month of May, Kargil plays host to an archery contest.

Places of Interest:

• Drass: Nestled in the Kargildistrict in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, 60 kilometers to the west, Drass sector is often dubbed as ‘The Gateway to Ladakh’. Drass is known as the second coldest inhabited region in the world. The valley starts from the foot of the Zojila pass and has an elevation of 10, 764 feet above sea level.

 

• Mini Marg: 50 km down towards Zojila pass, is a beautiful valley of Mini marg, presenting a serene view of plains, pastures and murmuring river.

 

• Mulbekh Monastery: Mulbekh Monastery is famous for its two gompas and the nine meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha. The Mulbekh Monastery with its gompas stands on a peak above the Srinagar-Leh highway.
